Research in Motion (company behind Blackberry mobile phones) are currently experiencing a drop in market share and are trying very hard to attract new customers as well as keeping existing ones.
Their tablet, simply called Playbook, received a very cold welcome and sales dropped off from an initial 500k units last quarter to 200k this quarter.
They now seem to be really focused on two things: Firstly – cut costs (planning to reduce their workforce by 10%), secondly by bringing new features to their devices and OS.
Earlier this month they bought Irish startup Newbay ($100m deal), a site that helps users create and share digital content in cloud (a week ago Apple introduced a similar service – iCould).
The new Blackberry OS7 will include NFC technology that will extend communication possibilities between mobile phones and other devices and possibly enable wireless payments.
Perhaps even more interesting – NFC wasn’t included in the new iPhone 4S released a couple days ago.
