Two fake websites claiming to be Wikipedia and Twitter have been removed from the Internet and fined £100,000 each.

This trend is coming from a relatively unknown category of site who use “typosquatting” to capitalize on typos — they buy domain names similar to those used by highly trafficked websites, and are most often missing a letter or have frequently used misspellings of popular sites.

Typosquatting websites such as ‘Wikapedia’ and ‘Twtter’ appearing on the internet to trick innocent web users into clicking on fraudulent ads that announce that the user has won a prize. Read more

LinkedIn’s 150 million users

On Thursday LinkedIn announced it now has 150 million members in its network, that is a massive 20 million increase over November.

The figure was revealed in a press release announcing the LinkedIn’s fourth quarter and full-year  results for 2011.

The company posted revenues in the amount of of $167.7 million, smashing the analysts’ Q4 predictions of $160 million. Adjusted profit was $0.12 cents per share, which exceeded analysts’ projections of 7 cents a share. LinkedIn’s stock was up more than 5% in after-hours trading. Read more

Facebook Gaming Roadmap Revealed

At the Inside Social Apps 2012 conference on Wednesday in San Francisco, Facebook revealed its roadmap for social games and mobile apps for the rest of the year and app developers have a lot to be smiling about.

Director of product management at Facebook, Carl Sjogreen, spoke to a crowded conference center about Facebook’s projections for the mobile social gaming and app space for this year, stating that the mobile space presents a huge opportunity to create cross-platform social games. Read more

Pinterest – the fastest 10 million in the west

Pinterest  have just hit 11.7 million unique monthly U.S. visitors, passing the 10 million mark earlier than any other standalone site in history.

Interestingly, people are spending so much time sharing images that now only Tumblr and Facebook have more social media time spent on site than Pinterest. 18-34 year old upper income women from the American heartland seem to be the most active users. Read more
